Schasz een satirisch reisverslag dat de lezers meeneemt op een hilarische tocht door het apenland. De inwoners, genummerd en vol ondeugden, verlangen ernaar mensen te worden. Na talloze vergaderingen besluiten de apen tot een 'generale afkapping' van hun staarten, een zelfverminking die Schasz met onverschrokken humor beschrijft. De Reize door het Aapenland kende aanvankelijk slechts bescheiden succes, waarschijnlijk door de scabreuze inhoud en de mysterieuze identiteit van de auteur. Was deze vreemde doctor misschien Pieter 't Hoen of Gerrit Paape? Intrigerender is de vraag waartegen de tekst zich verzet. Reflecteert de satire op tijdloze zotheid? Door de heruitgave van P.J. Buijnsters in 1973 ontdekte een nieuwe generatie lezers de dolle apenkolonie en de overeenkomsten met de mensenwereld. De Reize door het Aapenland groeide uit tot een satirische klassieker, ook in het onderwijs, en blijft populair. De laatste editie, verzorgd door Peter Altena, is inmiddels aan herdruk toe.
