Il fut à l'origine d'in conflit entre le Dannemark et la Suède à propos du droit d'utiliser les trois couronnes dans les armoiries du royaume. A grand renforts d'exemples tirés de documents anciens, monnaies, sceaux, et éléments divers, Scheffer tente de prouver l'antériorité de l'usage héraldique des trois couronnes par les souverains suédois.
