Generalmajor Walter Schellenberg (1910-1953), Hitlers letzter Geheimdienst-Chef, arbeitete bis kurz vor seinem Tod an seinen Lebenserinnerungen. 1956 veroffentlicht, bieten diese Memoiren ein authentisches Zeugnis aus dem innersten Machtzirkel der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft. Als enger Mitarbeiter von Heinrich Himmler und Reinhard Heydrich war Schellenberg in alle wesentlichen politischen Aktionen und Kriegsplanungen des nationalsozialistischen Staates eingeweiht. Er lernte die machtigsten Manner des Dritten Reiches kennen und erhielt durch seine geheimdienstlichen Mittel einen ungetrubten Blick hinter die Kulissen des NS-Machtapparates. Schellenberg trat 1933 der SS bei und wurde Mitglied der NSDAP. 1934 kam er zum politischen Geheimdienst der SS, dem SD, der zunehmend Aufgaben der inneren Sicherheit und Auslandsspionage ubernahm. Nach verschiedenen Stationen im Reichsinnenministerium und im Geheimen Staatspolizeiamt wurde er 1939 Leiter der Spionageabwehr Inland im Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA). 1941 wurde er zum SS-Standartenfuhrer befordert und Chef des Amts VI (Auslandsnachrichtendienst) des RSHA. Nach der Ermordung Heydrichs 1942 unterstand Schellenberg direkt Himmler und sondierte Moglichkeiten eines Kompromissfriedens mit England. 1944 ubernahm er die Aufgaben der militarischen Abwehr und leitete bis zum Zusammenbruch im Mai 1945 den gesamten Geheimdienst des Deutschen Reiches. Nach dem Krieg wurde er 1945.
