Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Small 1/8" piece of dustjacket missing at rear top edge of dustjacket and scuffing/minor damage at rear bottom of spine, elsewise a bright, clean, tight copy in a MYLAR PROTECTIVE COVER. "In the free moments in which he made his diary entries, and the m…ore reflective times when he wrote his letters, William H. S. Burgwyn wrote well about what was going on around him. He recorded in detail the campaigns in which he participated, both in General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and with the forces in eastern North Carolina. His writings reflect the tedium of daily life, the exhilaration of battle, his social life as an aristocratic officer, his manipulations for promotion and staff appointment. In addition, he writes at length about the hardship of prison life, albeit alleviated by greenbacks from Northern relatives." ILLUSTRATED in black-and-white photography and maps with accompanying descriptive captions. 186 pages. GH32.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. This is the August 1896 issue of "The Book Buyer", which announced on each cover that the magazine was "A Summary of American and Foreign Literature. This issue is particularly rich, not only in textual content, but, also, in illustrative accompaniment. OF particular interest is the article on F…riedrich Nietzsche, wherein Nietzsche demolishes Wagner. Also of interest, for the artistically inclined, is an article on naturalist, and illustrator William Hamilton Gibson, who had just recently died (in July 1896) . The cover design for "The Book Buyer", which remained the same through each of its issues, was drawn by American artist Will H. Low (Will Hicok Low). The picture was signed in the plate (lower right corner). TITLE : The Book Buyer — A Summary of American and Foreign Literature ISSUE : Vol. XIII, No. 7 DATE : August 1896 IMPRINT : Charles Scribner's Sons PLACE : New York STATUS : OP COVER ART : Will H. Low STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : Illustrated Monthly Periodical; volume pages 389 - 432 + frontispiece, + four pages of promotional ads at front (50 pages in all). approximately 7 1/8" x 9 3/4"; pictorial wraps, stapled and glued, with rough-cut edges; front cover has a drawing in the classical mode of the Muse of Literature sitting on a ledge . arranged at her feet is an array of books and journals. The rear cover and the insides of the covers are devoted to advertisements. Inside, the text is printed on both calendered paper (polished - pressed) and uncalendered (or soft) paper. A considerable amount of interesting period advertising can be found at the front (4 pages)- and the back (8 pages - unopened). This is the original, in wraps as issued. CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned periodical which remains solid and attractive , the following particulars noted : There is a vague damp stain that displays at the fore-edge of the front cover about 2 inches from the top; modest surface rub and a touch of near-negligible weathering. There are small edge nicks and tears (none of which amount to much) ; on the rear cover are a couple of minute tea stains. Bottom fore-edge corners are creased, front and back. The interior is clean and unmarked. All and all, a very good specimen. Will H. Low, William Hamilton Gibson (illustrator).
