Die Autorin beleuchtet, auf welche Quellen sich die indischen Traditionen berufen und dass die heutige, noch in vielerlei Hinsicht zu konstatierende Benachteiligung der Frau keineswegs einen permanenten Bestandteil der indischen Geschichte darstellt. Darüber hinaus zeigt Christiane Schlenner, dass zwar eine Gleichberichtigung der Frauen erreicht wurde - etwa durch die indische Verfassung von 1949 oder aufgrund von internationalen Abkommen. Allerdings belegt die Autorin auch, dass dieser Gleichheitsgrundsatz in zahlreichen Fällen nur auf dem Papier existiert und dass es sich Teile der indischen Gesellschaft - Männer wie Frauen - zur Aufgabe gemacht haben, diese Gleichberechtigung über Interessengruppen und Initiativen durchzusetzen.
