Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Der Symbolbegriff erwies sich in der Folgezeit als ein überaus fruchtbares Forschungsprinzip. Immer deutlicher trat mir nun bei meiner Arbeit das Wesen des Traumes entgegen, bis ich folgendes erkannte: Die Lehre von Freud, daß s…ich im Traum die Erfüllung sexueller Wünsche vollziehe, ist irrig. Ebenso falsch ist auch die Auffassung von Jung, daß der Traum eine Funktion des Unbewußten sei, durch die die Tätigkeit des Bewußten ergänzt oder auch berichtigt werde. Falsch ist auch die Volksmeinung, wonach der Traum ein prophetischer Hinweis auf künftige Ereignisse sei. Richtig dagegen ist folgender Satz: Der Traum ist eine Gedächtniserscheinung, d. h. eine im Schlaf sich vollziehende Wiedererneuerung (Reproduktion) eines eindrucksvollen affekthaltigen Erlebnisses aus dem Wachzustand. Die Erkenntnis dieser psychologischen Wahrheit fällt uns deshalb so schwer, weil das dem Traum zugrunde liegende Urerlebnis bei seiner Wiedererneuerung so stark verändert und verschleiert wird, daß wir uns im Traum nicht mehr - wie dies bei gewöhnlichen Gedächtnisleistungen stets der Fall ist - an das Urerlebnis erinnern können.
