Hulsius dice que leyo el manuscrito original con placer y admiracion. Camus, entre otros meritos, le reconoce el ser uno de los primeros que se hayan escrito sobre esta parte de la America meridional.Azara, tan severo con los cronistas del Rio de la Plata, y juez competente en la materia como geografo y conocedor del pais, declara que su obra es la mas exacta, la mas puntual en las situaciones y distancias de los lugares, y la mas ingenua e imparcial.Asi acreditado por los historiadores, cabe agregar que Ulrich Schmidel o Schmidel o Schmidt (1510-1581) fue un soldado, viajero y cronista aleman. Partio hacia el rio de la Plata integrando la expedicion del adelantado Pedro de Mendoza. Junto a el vivio los horrores de la primera fundacion de Buenos Aires. Durante veinte anos recorrio lo que llamo elParaiso de las selvas del Paraguay y el ChacoSus relatos, testimonios de un conquistador aleman, fueron las primeras cronicas de los territorios que luego serian Argentina y Paraguay.En 1554 Ulrico regreso a Estraubingen, donde heredo el patrimonio de su hermano y se convirtio en concejal. Tuvo que huir de la ciudad por profesar el luteranismo, dirigiendose a Ratisbona en 1562, donde murio en 1579. Par la grâce du bon Dieu, nous arrivâmes au Río della Plata en l'an 1535, où nous trouvâmes un endroit appartenant à un peuple de deux mille Indiens environ qu'on appelle Zechuruas. Ce peuple se nourrit uniquement de poisson et de viande et ne porte pas de vêtements, sauf les femmes qui se couvrent le bas d'un petit chiffon en coton du nombril jusqu'aux genoux. A notre arrivée, ils prirent la fuite avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants et quittèrent les terres. En 1534, Ulrich Schmidel s'embarque de Cadix comme simple soldat, à destination du Río de la Plata. Il s'apprête à passer vingt ans sur le continent sud-américain, à une époque où tout reste à faire pour les Européens conquistadors, avides d'étendre leur pouvoir. De retour en Allemagne, Schmidel livre le souvenir de sa vie de lansquenet, où chaque jour était une lutte. On y découvre la fondation de Buenos Aires mais surtout la faim omniprésente qui pousse parfois au cannibalisme, les conquêtes qui n'apportent que peu de profit et la mort qui fauche.
