Ciò nonostante sono concordi nell'affermare che "tra i diversi compartimenti che possono tracciarsi intorno ai singoli passi delle Alpi sul dato delle minime distanze tra i primari centri del commercio, il dominio del Gottardo risulta assai più vasto di quello del Lucomagno". W. Schmidlin è anche autore di un'opera a favore della libertà commerciale, tradotta in italiano nel 1873, dal titolo Protezionismo doganale o libertà di commercio?".
