(Cultuurhistorische studies). - Pieter de Swart (1709-1773) is een van de belangrijkste architecten van de achttiende eeuw. Het grootste deel van de Nederlandse bevolking heeft wel eens oog in oog gestaan met een van zijn creaties. Na eerst in Breda gestudeerd te hebben, studeerde hij van 1745-1747 in Parijs aan de vermaarde architectuurschool van Jacques-François Blondel. Als hofarchitect van Willem IV ontwierp De Swart vervolgens een aantal paleizen die konden wedijveren met de grote Europese koninklijke paleizen. Vanuit zijn standplaats Den Haag trad hij op als architect voor de adel en het patriciaat. In Den Haag ontwierp hij onder meer Museum Het Paleis en de Koninklijke Schouwburg. Zijn werkterrein strekte zich uiteindelijk van Den Bosch, via Gouda en Rotterdam tot in Leeuwarden uit. In dit rijk geïllustreerde boek wordt beschreven hoe Pieter de Swart van meestertimmerman in Breda wist op te klimmen tot hofarchitect van de stadhouder en hoe hij een zeer druk bezette en veelgevraagde ontwerper werd van de hoogste kringen in de Republiek der Verenigde Provinciën.
