"First American from the second London edition, revised and enlarged by R. B. Patton" (as stated upon title page). i-viii, 1-1413 pages. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15cm. Original full leather, boards scuffed and stained with wear along edges particularly at corners, spine head worn and nicked, heel chipped 3cm deep at rear joint with shallower loss at center with 2cm loss adjacent to bottom front joint, heels of quires exposed. Scuffed spine minimally decorated with four slightly raised bands; spine's original title label still present but maroon color well faded with small loss at top left corner - however label's gilt stamped lettering remains bright. nineteenth century style personal bookplate (A.L. Jenness) at top left of front pastedown with same owner's inverted ink signature (Albert L Jenness) on front free endpaper and with antiquarian ink stamp (A.L. Jenness) upon front flyleaf. Tender binding split evident between front free endpaper and front flyleaf. Bug damage at bottom margins of initial leaves inclusive to page 40 causing some paper loss and tearing but with only negligible adverse effect to text. Pages 1097-1104 slightly pulled with some stress to binding between those leaves. Moisture staining evident at bottom edges of rear leaves; verso of concluding page 1413 and rear blanks including pastedown adhered to one another along inner (spine side) margins. Much of rear pastedown has lost adhesion to rear board. Mostly mild toning and foxing upon interior leaves. Still a good antiquarian copy. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 4.25 pounds (1.92 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail {AntiqShelf #1}. …
