Single sheet (16 4/8 x 20 2/8 inches to the neatline, full margins). Fine engraved folding map of the United States with original colour in outline, with a fine vignette of an American eagle in the lower left (one or two small holes at folds, some spotting). Contemporary orange paper wrappers, gilt. Based on Finley's map of the United States engraved by G.W. Merchant of Albany, and printed on banknote paper. The United States has been established for half a century, and is depicted as far west as the Rocky Mountains, with the state of Missouri defined but Missouri Territory encompassing what was to become Iowa and all points north and west; Northwest Territory spreads northward above Illinois, Arkansas Territory extends west into what was to become Indian Territory and later Oklahoma, and Texas is named, but firmly a part of Mexico which had recently gained its independence from Spain in 1821, and had only the previous year (1825) accommodated the "Old 300" under Stephen Austin's empresario agreement. St. Antonio and Galveston are the only two non-native place-names within the territory.
