Der Bildungsweg stellt 'die innere Progression des Helden' dar, welche sehr häufig mit der Zeitsymbolik vermittelt wird. Die Entwicklung des Protagonisten wird dabei von verschiedenen Instanzen beeinflusst. Eine wichtige Rolle spielen hierbei auch 'kontrastierende Nebenhandlungen, in die Nebencharaktere als Symbol der Lebens- und Bildungsmächte (z.B. die Frauen in Johann Wolfgang von Goethes 'Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre' 1795f.) eingeführt werden.'Wilhelm entscheidet sich für die Abkehr von der Kaufmannswelt und schließt sich einer umherziehenden Theatergesellschaft an. Im 18. Jahrhundert gleicht dies einem sozialen Abstieg, doch in der Schauspielwelt bieten sich ihm '[.] die Chance zur Selbsterprobung im Rollenspiel [.] und die Möglichkeit, jenseits bürgerlicher Moralzwänge Erfahrungen mit dem weiblichen Geschlecht zu sammeln.'
