Softcover. First Edition. 3" x 4.5" softcover notebook, with green, purple, and white flower print wrappers, covered in stickers from various German cities. Handwritten manuscript. Belonged to Captain Ralph Lo [sic] Schuler of the C Truck Company, 4th Corps Artillery Park, American expeditionary forces, out of Fort Wadsworth, New York. Described as "my little book of what I have seen and gone through in this great World War." Describes his time in World War I from August 1918 to June 1919, including many remarkable scenes of post-war destruction. Includes sighting submarines on the way to Marseilles, France; a stopover in Manchester, England; seeing German POWs in France; training in the French countryside; fellow soldier dying of Spanish flu, attending his memorial service, and subsequently contracting Spanish flu himself. Later entries include a description of damage left by retreating Germans in Toul, France. Visits Dead Man's Hill (Le Mort Homme) north of Verdun, and then travels through the No Man's Land. From there Schuler departs by car in December 1918 to Germany, where he will remain until May 1919. Schuler lives and works in Mayen, Germany hauling ammunition as part of the American Expeditionary Forces, and makes frequent trips to Koblenz, Germany. Tucked in is a dried clover and a small piece of paper. Overall very good. Front cover is slightly warped, and there is some edge wear. Overall very good.
