Eine grundlegende musikalische Ausbildung erhielt er in Prag durch Siegfried Kisch und Ignaz Tedesco (Klavier) sowie durch Vaclav Tomasek (Theorie). Nach ersten Auftritten in Dresden lebte er ab Mitte der 1840er Jahre in Paris. Erst nachdem ihn Chopin zum Konzertieren ermuntert hatte, präsentierte er sich am 2. Nov. 1845 der Öffentlichkeit. In den folgenden Jahren unternahm Schulhoff mehrere Konzertreisen durch Frankreich, England, Spanien, Rußland (bis hin zur Krim) sowie nach Wien. Mit Rücksicht auf Gesundheit und Familie widmete er sich jedoch bald verstärkt dem Unterricht und Komponieren - zunächst in Paris, ab 1870 in Dresden und schließlich in Berlin, wo er 1897 zum Professor ernannt wurde.
