Ulrich Klemm (Augsburg) recherchiert die internationale Rezeption der libertären Reformpädagogik von Leo Tolstoi. Im Beitrag von Armin Bernhard (Essen) steht der heute vergessene, aber bedeutende aus Österreich stammende sozialistische Reformpädagoge und Austromarxist Otto Felix Kanitz (1940 ermordet im KZ Buchenwald) im Mitterlpunkt. Der Band zeigt die Facettenvielfalt und Heterogenität einer Freiheitspädagogik im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert an ausgewählten Beispielen und macht deutlich, dass es in diesem Zeitraum bis heute eine Tradition von Gegenentwürfen zur etatistischen Bildungskultur gibt, die auch immer einer starken Repression ausgesetzt war und letztendlich nicht in den Lehrkanon pädagogischer Professionalisierung aufgenommen wurde.
