Von eminenter Bedeutung ist er für die KLEIST-Forschung; das Material zu TIECKs KLEIST-Biographie in der Ausgabe der "Hinterlassenen Schriften" von 1821 stammt von ihm. Dies war ursächlich dafür, dass der KLEIST-Forscher Helmut Sembdner das Standardwerk zu SCHÜTZ verfasste ("Schütz-Lacrimas. Das Leben des Romantikerfreundes, Poeten und Literaturkritikers Wilhelm von Schütz", Berlin 1974), aus dem im Folgenden ausführlich zitiert wird. "Die Literaturgeschichte hat unrecht getan, sich so wenig dieses bemerkenswerten Literaten anzunehmen, der zu Lebzeiten die Freundschaft und persönliche Wertschätzung vieler bedeutender Zeitgenossen besaß. LUDWIG TIECK sah in ihm den künftigen Vollender der eigenen dichterischen Ziele; AUGUST WILHELM SCHLEGEL gab die Lacrimas-Dichtung des Freundes heraus und stellte ihr ein begeistertes Sonett voran; für GOETHE, dessen naturwissenschaftliche Schriften SCHÜTZ als erster zu würdigen verstand, war er ein wichtiger und ernstzunehmender Gesprächspartner." (S.10). "Vom jungen SCHÜTZ muß eine besonders starke Faszination ausgegangen sein. (.) Für TIECK, mit dem er nach SOLGERs Zeugnis ein 'sehr vertrautes poetisches Leben' führte, scheint er fast die Stelle des verstorbenen Freundes NOVALIS eingenommen zu haben. GOETHE nennt ihn den 'mehrjährigen geprüften Freund'. ADAM MÜLLER rechnet ihn zu seinen 'edlen und erfahrnen Freunden'. (.) Selbst der Spötter CLEMENS BRENTANO bezeichnet ihn als einen guten Menschen von seltenem, fast altfränkischem Enthusiasmus für Poesie und beteuert: 'Ich habe ihn sehr lieb gewonnen'." (S.11).
