B.I., um 1850, 12,5 x 10,1 (H) Schwanthaler wurde in Ried ausgebildet und arbeitete danach bei seinem Vetter Johann Georg Schwanthaler in Gmunden, bei Franz Hitzl in Salzburg und bei Martin Ignaz Ingerl in Augsburg. Dort besuchte er auch die Akademie. Nach München wandte er sich wahrscheinlich schon vor 1785, dem Jahr, in dem er dort die Bildhauergerechtigkeit des verstorbenen Josef Jerger (auch Irger u. a.) kaufte und das Bürgerrecht erwarb. Bis zu seinem Tod lebte und arbeitete er in München.

Der Sohn Franz Schwanthalers war während seiner durch König Ludwig I. finanzierten Studienaufenthalte in Rom Schüler von Bertel Thorvaldsen gewesen und wirkte seit 1835 als Professor an der Münchner Akademie. Der 1844 nobilitierte Schwanthaler gilt als der bedeutendste Künstler des Münchner Klassizismus. Neben seinem Hauptwerk, dem volkstümlichen Standbild der Bavaria' (183748), schuf er monumental-dekorative Arbeiten, u. a. Reliefs (182643) für den Königsbau der Münchner Residenz, die Gruppe der Hermannsschlacht' (183241) für den Nordgiebel der Walhalla bei Regensburg sowie mehrere Denk- und Grabmäler (u. a. Mozart-Denkmal in Salzburg, 1842)" (DBE).

Es ziert das Vorzimmer des Königbaues im neuen Teil der Residenz. - Dieses posthum erschienene Werk wurde vom Neffen des Künstler Xaver Schwanthaler hrsg.
