Edward Sclater, (1623-c.1698), Anglican clergyman and (briefly) Roman Catholic convert. Curate of St Mary's, Putney, from 1663, Sclater converted to Catholicism after the accession of James II, justifying his decision in 'Consensus Veterum'. Sclater 'claimed that it was a fear of being outside the communion of the universal church and a growing belief in the real presence of Christ's body and blood in the eucharist which led him to abandon Anglicanism. He also argued that, unlike the Roman church, Protestant churches could not claim foundation from St Peter's see' (ODNB). The tract generated responses by Edward Stillingfleet, Edward Gee, and Edward Pelling. After the revolution of 1688, Sclater returned to Anglicanism and made a public recantation of his Catholic faith, which 'must have been a particularly humiliating experience as his critic, Edward Gee, under the supervision of Henry Compton, bishop of London, drafted the recantation' (ODNB).
