Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Overall, the book is good but has a couple of significant flaws. The lower end of the spine cover is off, about 1 1/2 inches, spine cover is detached at rear but holding on, on the front. Also, the last page of the text and the first page of the advertising at rear is torn horizontally the width of the page. Otherwise, some rubbing to the full leather boards, spine ends and corners bumped and a bit worn. Front gutter is starting to seperate. Front tissue covering the engraving of Nairne has a tear, piece missing at edge. The preface page has a tear at the lower edge about 2 1/2 inches, gutter split after that page. The rest of the book is clean and unmarked. So basically, good minus. I am enclosing the spine piece.

It is meant to meet the wants of those whose desire is to have a full sketch of the Reformer's career, but one which, at the same time, is not overburdened with unnecessary details. Begins: 'Dear Rev Sir / Glad to see you took up the "cudgels" on behalf of the "Ulster Scot."' The writer of the letter considers that the part played by this group 'in building industry &c.' was surpassed by their efforts 'in cristainising [sic] and civilising the nations of the world'. Descending into sectarianism he continues: 'The Roman Catholic Hierarchy judging from their public speeches would have us believe the very opposite. Like many another Scott I read with delight your article to the "Times" and on behalf of myself and others I return you my sincerest thanks'. TWO: Unsigned Note (1p, 8vo), addressed from '19 Sutton Court Road. / London. Chiswick. W.' Clearly written by Roman Catholic businessman W. Vance Packman, who corresponded from this address at the time. Reads: 'It is a pity that you have failed to point out that all the above were Celtic Catholics in communion with Apostolic See'.
