Bound in the original black boards, stamped in bright gold. From the dust jacket: "Witness to the Truth tells the extraordinary life story of a grassroots human rights leader and his courageous campaign to win the right to vote for the African Americans of Lake Providence, Louisiana. Born in 1901 in a small, almost all-black parish, John H. Scott grew up in a community where black businesses, schools, and neighborhoods thrived in isolation from the white population. The settlement appeared self-sufficient and independent -- but all was not as it seemed. From Reconstruction until the 1960s, African Americans still were not allowed to register and vote. Scott, a minister and farmer, proceeded to redress this inequality. Ultimately convincing Attorney General Robert Kennedy to participate in his crusade, Scott led a twenty-five year struggle that graphically illustrates how persistent efforts by local citizens translated into a national movement. Told in Scott's own words, Witness to the Truth recounts the complex tyranny of southern race relations in Louisiana. Raised by grandparents who lived during slavery, Scott grew up learning about the horrors of that institution, and he himself experienced the injustices of Jim Crow laws. Without bitterness or anger, he chronicles almost one hundred years of life in the parish, including migrations between the two world wars, the displacement of African American farmers during the New Deal, and the shocking methods white southerners used to keep African Americans under economic domination and away from the polls. Chapter president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for more than thirty years and a recipient of the A. P. Tureaud Citizens Award, Scott embodied the persistence, strength, and raw courage required of African American leaders in the rural South, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. His story illustrates the contributions of local NAACP leaders in advancing the human rights movement. Cleo Scott Brown, Scott's daughter, draws on oral history interviews with her father conducted by historian Joseph Logsdon as the basis for the book. She also uses personal papers, court transcripts, records of the East Carroll chapter of the NAACP, interviews with other East Carroll residents, family recollections, and her own conversations with her father to complete the biography.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by Cleo Scott Brown . Hardcover. New condition/New dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. xxi, 289pp. + 20 pages of illustrations. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

The exterior shows wear throughout, edge wear, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior with signs of wear, namely minor yellowing. The hinge is slightly loose but remains firmly attached. Good readable copy.; "During the past decade my wife and I have frequently been asked the question: "Where can we buy a book that will give us the essential information about old porcelain and yet will not require too much time to read?" The further inquiry usually followed: "Why don't you write such a book?" As a result of these questions we gave the matter serious consideration, which revealed that while a number of excellent books were available dealing with individual factories and others with certain countries, none seemed to fill the need or serve the purpose pose that we had in mind. Few books dealing with German or French factories had been published in English. Many of the existing books on porcelain had been written many years ago and in some cases were now out of print. Considerable new information was available as a result of the research of the several Ceramic Circles. We had ourselves collected much new material through travel, study, and experience in connection with putting together our own collection. We accordingly decided to write a book which would supply what seemed to us the principal need in the literature of antique porcelain: an up-to-date digest beginning with the Chinese but dealing mainly with the best periods of the European factories, that is from 1710 to 1820. We take considerable pride in the many excellent illustrations which we present, many of them not previously published. For some of these we are indebted to the great museums of the world and for many others to individual collectors, particularly in this country. As a matter of convenience and with we hope pardonable pride, we have shown a number of illustrations from the collection that we have had the pleasure of putting together, and for this we ask the reader's indulgence. For the benefit of those who will not find time to read the digest, we have added at the end of most chapters a condensed statement, giving the principal characteristics and marks. We realize that a cross-index has advantages to the serious student, yet even after consulting the indexes of other books we have often found difficulty in finding the desired information without recourse to tediously searching through many pages before finding the one or ones we sought. In our book therefore, we decided not to have an index but to include in the table of contents a rather detailed list of subjects as they appear in the book along with page references. We trust that the reader will have no difficulty in finding quickly any desired subject. With the exception of the frontispiece all photographs are in the back of the book, beginning with the color plates and following with the black-and-white ones in the same order of topics as in the text. Detailed descriptions will be found immediately preceding the plates." excerpt from the introduction by George Ryland Scott, Jr, Scottswood, Germantown, Tennessee, U.S.A., 1960.
