No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Hand-colored copper engraving, 400 × 493 mm, on paper 483 × 584 mm, verso blank (paper slightly age-toned, minor traces of restoration along centrefold.) The second state. A finely coloured example of this important large-format map of the Duchy of Breslau, corresponding to modern-day Wrocław and the wider region of Lower Silesia in southwestern Poland. The cartography is highly detailed, depicting settlements through pictorial symbols differentiating towns, villages, castles, and ecclesiastical centres. Relief is suggested by stylised hillocks representing wooded terrain, while rivers—most prominently the Odra—are drawn as the principal organising feature of the landscape. Political and administrative boundaries are highlighted in outline colour. The upper left corner contains an elaborate armorial cartouche with the coat of arms of the Duchy of Wołów, surmounted by crossed flags and a crowned female allegorical figure symbolising ducal authority. At upper centre is a highly decorative dedication cartouche in elaborate strapwork with shells, volutes, and scrollwork, addressed to Bernhard Wilhelm Nusler, and crediting the survey work of Georg Vechner and Jonas Scultetus of Sprottau (Silesia). In the lower right is a finely executed inset bird's-eye plan of Breslau (120 × 190 mm), depicting the city's insular structure within the branches of the Odra. The dense medieval street network, bridges, fortifications, and suburban settlements are rendered with exceptional clarity and topographical precision, reflecting the importance of Breslau as the principal city of Silesia. The map is the fourth in the series of Silesian duchy maps produced by Jonas Scultetus, regarded as one of the foremost Silesian cartographers of the seventeenth century. Trained in law at Frankfurt an der Oder and Leipzig, he produced his principal cartographic works in the decade 1625-1635. The original surveying was undertaken jointly with Georg Vechner (1590-1647) of Kożuchów (Freystadt), a doctor of theology, whose precise role in the map's production remains uncertain. All of Scultetus's Silesian maps were first issued by Henricus Hondius in Amsterdam. Our copy is the second state with Janssonius imprint. The map is regarded as one of the most accomplished and visually striking depictions of Silesia from the Dutch cartographic tradition, notable both for its accuracy and its rich decorative programme.
