Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, [8], 308pp, [map], [appendix], [4]. Blue cloth, title stamped on the spine. The first printing, with no additional printings noted. Cloth torn on the spine, soiling to spine. Front hinge starting, but stable. Occasional foxing throug…hout. Frontispiece portrait of Count Luckner, numerous illustrated plates, endpaper maps. In the publisher's near fine dust jacket, likely married with this copy, faint soiling to spine, bright illustrations. Inscribed on the second free endpaper: "By Joe / Mr. John W. Binford / never say die! / yours Felix Count Luckner / Xmas 1936." Count Felix von Luckner (1881-1966) was a German naval officer famed for his World War I commerce-raiding exploits aboard the Seeadler, a wind-powered auxiliary cruiser he commanded with an unusual emphasis on minimizing loss of life; over an 11-month cruise in 1916-17, he captured or sank more than a dozen Allied ships while taking hundreds of prisoners without a single combat fatality. Nicknamed the "Sea Devil," he cultivated a public image of chivalry at sea, and his postwar career mixed lectures, memoir writing (The Sea Devil's Fo'c'sle, The Sea Devil), and occasional controversy tied to his status as a nationalist symbol during the Weimar and early Nazi periods, though he later distanced himself from the regime. His dramatic escape attempts after the Seeadler was wrecked on Mopelia Island-culminating in a brief recapture after seizing a small boat-added to his legend. The first edition of Count Luckner, The Sea Devil, by Lowell Thomas, inscribed by Count Felix von Luckner, Captain of the SMS Seeadler. (illustrator). Signed.

(Sabin 25624) (Arctic Bibliography 5194) (Field 560) This work is the first issue, with the text ending on p. 768. This work details John Franklin's Coppermine Expedition (1819-1822), formally the British Arctic Land Expedition, an overland venture aimed at charting the northern coast of North America eastward from the mouth of the Coppermine River. Traveling from Hudson Bay through the Canadian interior by canoe and on foot, Franklin reached the Arctic Ocean in July 1821 and surveyed several hundred miles of previously unmapped coastline, but the return journey became catastrophic due to inadequate provisioning and harsh weather. Starvation, exposure, and disease devastated the party, resulting in eleven deaths-including murder and suspected cannibalism, yet it still produced valuable geographic data about the polar region. The first edition, first issue of Narrative Of A Journey To The Shores Of The Polar Sea by Captain John Franklin, published in 1823. (illustrator).

Condition: very good to fine. folio, 30x 19cm, 4p. (1 page ms letter, & docketed on page 4), paper somewhat toned, script is all clear and legible, Michael Francklin (1720-1782) was the Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia from 1766 to 1773. He had been involved in mercantile ventures since 1752 in the colony and although wealthy…in land ownership, was noted for being cash-poor. Joshua Mauger (1725-88) was an entrepreneur in Halifax from 1849 to 1760 and became the largest ship-owner in the Colony. Returning to England, he was appointed Nova Scotia's Agent in London in 1762. Brook Watson (1735-1807) served as a commissary with the British Army and was prominent in the expulsion of the Acadians as well as serving at Louisbourg with Wolfe. He was involved in Halifax with Francklin hence the reference in the Hughes letter. Captain Edward Hughes was the captain of the HMS Somerset in 1758 to 1762 and again in 1771 to 1774. He served at Louisbourg in 1758 and at Quebec in 1759 and retired as an admiral after amassing a fortune in prize money. An interesting manuscript from the early days of Halifax and Nova Scotia.

A vivid, phonetically written manuscript letter from an American merchant sea captain detailing the hardships, financial transactions, and logistical movements of late… nineteenth-century Caribbean trade. Writing from Trinidad, Cuba, to his daughter, Captain Carter notes that his vessel is 'fresh loaded' with a cargo bound for either Philadelphia or Boston, while grumbling about false port rumors and brutal local conditions ('the moscatus & sand flys ar so bad cant gith much slipe'). The letter documents a substantial financial transfer of $400 via the U.S. Consul through 'st gagos' (Santiago de Cuba) to the prominent New York shipping firm Simpson, Clapp & Co., capturing a raw, primary account of a 'hard' commercial voyage. CONDITION: Very Good. The leaf is structurally sound, square, and free of major chips or edge loss. The purple ink remains highly legible, bold, and distinct against the paper. The paper stock shows moderate, expected handling wear, a horizontal and vertical mailing fold, and some light, even age-toning. Scattered mild foxing and minor browning are present along the upper margin of the first page, consistent with its storage environment and maritime transit. KEY FEATURES +++ Visuals: Written on an unclipped single leaf of cream paper featuring a clean, crisp typographic letterhead for Loud, Claridge & Co., Ship Stores and Chandlery of Baltimore. +++ Binding: Unbound, single sheet folded into a four-page format, with text occupying two full pages. Retains original mailing folds. +++ Content: A highly descriptive personal and professional update covering cargo status, destination changes, consul communications, financial drafts, and severe environmental hardships. +++ Imprint: Datelined 'Trinidad Cuba June 16 1879' in ink at the head of the first page. +++ Specs: Quarto, 10.0 x 7.0 inches; 2 pages of manuscript text in purple ink. +++ Limitation & Signatures: Hand-signed by the author at the conclusion of page two: 'A S Carter'. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - The post-Civil War era saw American merchant shippers fighting to maintain dominance in international trade routes, with the Caribbean remaining a critical theater for raw goods like sugar, rum, and molasses. Captains operating these routes functioned not just as navigators, but as mobile business executives managing thousands of dollars in cargo, customs fees, and bank drafts across international lines. This letter captures Captain A. S. Carter during a demanding leg of his journey. His references to 'st gagos' (Santiago de Cuba) and Trinidad isolate his positioning within the major sugar-exporting hubs of southern Cuba. The interaction with the local U.S. Consul highlights the vital role that diplomatic outposts played in distributing mail and securing financial drafts for passing American vessels. The reference to Simpson, Clapp & Co. adds significant historical weight. As prominent New York ship-brokers operating during the height of the nineteenth-century shipping boom, they managed fleets of merchant barks and schooners. Carter's letter provides an unedited, bottom-up perspective of the physical toll required to satisfy those northern financial accounts. SCHOLARLY FEATURES +++ Socio-Historical Context: Captures the operational realities of the post-bellum American merchant fleet in the Spanish West Indies, highlighting how captains navigated foreign ports, local rumors, and institutional health risks. +++ Linguistic Value: The non-standard orthography offers an un-vandalized phonological look at nineteenth-century American English as spoken by working-class mariners. +++ Maritime Trade History: Connects directly to Simpson, Clapp & Co., a well-documented New York commission merchant and ship-broker firm operating out of South Street, specializing in West Indies trade. SUBJECTS: Merchant Marine History, Caribbe.
