Hardcover. Condition: Good. Quarter bound in heavily rubbed paper covered boards. The boards are worn and chipped with surface loss. There is a hint of a twist to spine, and leather is chipped to top and bottom compartments. The leather is worn and scuffed and there is the odd chip. Extremities are bumped and chipped (see photo). Internally there is an ink inscription to front free endpaper, and an annotation to rear. Contents are thumbed and are a bit grubby, foxed and browned (little heavier in places). The outer page edges are bumped and are a little chipped/creased in places. Contents are cracking/cracked in a couple of places and thus some pages are a bit shaky. Five leaves have a large, closed tear. There is some pale staining two a few leaves. There are some bound-in creases, chips and nicks, else still in very readable condition. Illustrated with heraldic engravings throughout. A scarce work, with a Genealogical History of the House of STANLEY, Conquests, Rebels, Soldiers, Sieges (Bolton, Liverpool etc), Battles, their role in the ENGLISH CIVIL WAR, and a full description of the ISLE OF MAN, and its topography, Geography and history.

Leather bound. First edition under this title of the author's "MEMOIRS Containing a Genealogical and Historical Account of the Antient and Honorable House of Stanley.". Bound in 3/4-leather and marbled boards. Leather rubbed; scattered foxing throughout; hinges firm, pages tight, and book in overall good condition. Marginal tear to p. 437/438. The Stanley Family is one of the most influential in British history and carries the title Earl of Derby. Hockey's famed Stanley Cup was named after the 16th Earl of Derby. This work was written anonymously by John Seacombe.

The expenses are defrayed by the board of patients whose friends can afford to pay for their maintenance, and by benefactions, legacies, &c.' (In the entry 'John Mackintosh' is still listed as treasurer.) 1p, landscape 12mo. Addressed by Mackintosh on reverse to 'Mr. James Penny / Bookseller / Fore St. / Exeter'. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-creased paper, with slight staining and damage from breaking open wafer. Beneath the heading 'Lunatic Asylum, near Exeter.' in gothic font, is the following (with manuscript text in square brackets): 'MR. [Penny] owes for [8] Weeks' Board and Maintenance of [William Seacombe] from the [6th. May] to [1st. July 1811] at [15] Shillings per Week.£ [6 . 0 . 0]'. Beneath this is the receipt: 'Settled 22d. June 1811 / J Mackintosh Treasr'. And towards the bottom of the page, just above the slug: 'The above to be sent to Mr Mackintosh Treasr. Palace Gate Exeter, on or before the 29th June, as the annual account of the Asylum must be made up at that time. -' See Image.
