He made important and comprehensive observations of the sun, which he began studying in 1851. Secchi was particularly interested in sunspots and solar flares, and the beautiful colored plates in this set include many illustrations of a wide variety of solar flares. The text also includes descriptions of many of the instruments he used in his researches. Secchi theorized that solar flares and sunspots probably had more effect on the weather and other natural phenomena on Earth than had previously been thought. Secchi was one of the first to adapt spectroscopy to astronomy in a systematic manner. He was also one of the first to apply the new technique of photography to astronomic use, making several daguerreotypes in the course of his researches during the solar eclipse of 1851). This volume presents the Italian translation of the only poetic work attributed to Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) which was recently found in manuscript form.
