Hardback. Condition: New. Illustrated. Re-examines German cinema's representation of the Germans as victims during the Second World War and its aftermath. The recent "discovery" of German wartime suffering has had a particularly profound impact in German visual culture. Films from Margarethe von Trotta's Rosenstrasse (2003) to Oliver Hirschbiegel's Oscar-nominated Downfall (2004) and the two-part television mini-series Dresden (2006) have shown how ordinary Germans suffered during and after the war. Such films have been presented by critics as treating a topic that had been taboo for German filmmakers. However, the representation of wartime suffering has a long tradition on the German screen. For decades, filmmakers have recontextualized images of Germans as victims to engage shifting social and ideological discourses. By focusing on this process, the present volume explores how the changing representation of Germans as victims has shaped the ways in which both of the postwar German states and the now-unified nation have attempted to facethe trauma of the past and to construct a contemporary place for themselves in the world. Contributors: Seán Allan, Tim Bergfelder, Daniela Berghahn, Erica Carter, David Clarke, John E. Davidson, Sabine Hake, JenniferKapczynski, Manuel Köppen, Rachel Palfreyman, Brad Prager, Johannes von Moltke. Paul Cooke is Professor of German Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds and Marc Silberman is Professor of German at the University of Wisconsin.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover, slightly oversized. Black leather spine worn and chipped, with raised cords and gold lettering, both scuffed. Marbled paper over boards. Edges worn and corners quite rounded and bumped. Patterned endpapers. Wear and scuffs to the inside front cover. 105 hand colored lithographs. On each facing page, the name of the plate is printed and any numbered details from the plate are explained. There is no corresponding text - this is the plates & their explanatory pages only. The plates are good quality lithographs, most of the them with hand coloring. At the bottom of the plates, it says, 'Dessine dap nat par Emile Beau. and Imp. Lemercier, Paris. There is some foxing here and these, most pronounced on the blank backs of the plates, but also appearing on the plates and facing pages. It is not terrible foxing, but it is scattered throughout. Binding is cracked between plates 93 and 94, but everything is still attached and secure. The plates themselves are very well done, though not of a subject that lends itself to removal and framing. They all illustrated pregnancy, childbirth, delivery, in utero positions of the fetus, gynecological tools, etc. There is no publication date on the title page. Copyright page has only a blue rubberstamp added much later that says Copy 2. 12/10/51. I have seen copies described as being printed in 1881 and in 1860, but none of those other copies say whether there's a date printed in the book itself. Please email with questions or to request photos.
