Segal was a Jewish-American poet, dancer, and choreographer with strong ties to the labor movement. She formed the Red Dancers in 1929, a dance group that performed works in tribute to Lenin. She is also known for her work Black and White, one of the first interracial dance performances in America. Her visit to the Soviet Union and leftist politics led her to be called to testify before the New York State Legislature during the Red Scare. Kamen was her husband and illustrated many of her poetry books.
