O presente estudo analisa a obra de Walter Benjamin ¿ reconhecidamente o mais criativo pensador do período entre Guerras da Alemanha ¿ do ponto de vista da sua relação com os revolucionários poetas-filósofos Novalis e Friedrich Schlegel. O pensamento de Benjamin é iluminado a partir de vários conceitos fundamentais, como o de ¿tradução¿, de ¿linguagem origináriä, de ¿leitura do mundo¿, de ¿filosofia como interpretação¿ e de ¿aurä. O autor ainda abre a obra de Benjamin a uma leitura interna, destacando o percurso de um pensamento original que uniu como poucos a tradição filosófica do Idealismo e do Romantismo à tradição do Judaísmo. Este livro de Márcio Seligmann-Silva trata do conceito de crítica em Walter Benjamin (1892-1940), que se propôs ¿recriar a critica como gênero¿ nos tempos da República de Weimar, através do estudo e aperfeiçoamento da critica de arte criada com base nas propostas filosóficas de Kant e Fichte pelos românticos de lena, Friedrich Schlegel e Novalis. A partir de um exame das pesquisas já existentes sobre a questão, este trabalho dedica-se a comparar as concepções de Benjamin e dos românticos focalizando três aspectos centrais: a filosofia da linguagem, a crítica do conhecimento e a crítica de arte. Nesses três âmbitos, o estudo se detém, por um lado, no uso estrategicamente negativo do conceito de crítica, no sentido de que Benjamin precisou ¿limpar a área de ação do crítico¿, para poder recriar o gênero. São expostas detalhadamente a crítica de uma concepção puramente instrumental e comunicativa da linguagem, a partir de uma concepção mágica e metafísica; a crítica das teorias racionalistas, sistêmicas e logocêntricas do conhecimento, próprias da Aufklärung, a partir de um resgate do mito, do fragmento e da protolinguagem (Ursprache); e a crítica de formas tradicionais de crítica da arte como o universalismo superficial da história das ideias, as diversas facetas do positivismo (biográfico, psicologista, sociologizante), o formalismo e a apologia de autores e obras ¿ contrapondo-Ihes uma concepção de critica como medium-de-reflexão. Por outro lado, o trabalho deixa claro que o conceito benjaminiano e romântico de critica é baseado numa visão essencialmente positiva, em que se destaca uma teoria do conhecimento que engloba o trabalho da imagem ao lado do trabalho do conceito, bem como a noção de uma crítica poética, produtiva, que ¿potenciä a obra criticada, atualizando-a num determinado ¿agorä que rompe com o ¿continuum¿ da história. Uma característica marcante do estudo de Márcio Seligmann-Silva, que é também tradutor da tese de doutorado de Benjamin sobre o romantismo alemão, é o fato de ele pensar o conceito de critica poética em estreita relação com a teoria e prática da tradução, o que pode se tornar particularmente fecundo para o debate desses conceitos de critica no contexto intelectual brasileiro.
