Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Madame de Staal was a Frenchwoman of the 18th Century. A lady-in-waiting to the Duchesse du Maine, a notoriously hot-headed employer, de Staal met many Important folks and lived through some interesting events which she recorded in her memoirs. This particular edition, translated and published in 1877 by Selina Bathurst is illustrated with many portraits of these including a color plate and many black and white tipped in plates. Included are the Duchesse du Maine, her employer, several dukes including the regent, Duc d Orleans, a wonderful two page engraving of the Duke, the abbe de Vertot, and others along with several scenic views of certain areas including Rouen. The illustrations are wonderful. There are approximately 24 plates that I counted, two in color and many of the duc d Orleans. The block is tight and secure with some discoloration from reading, foxing on some of the prints and some shadowing from the inks on opposite pages although not on every one. Mme de Staal was known for her entertaining witty style of writing and her memoirs capture a moment in French history before the Revolution. Please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Very Good Condition: 8vo, 3/4 leather with marble boards and endpapers. Ridged and banded spine with gilt fleur-de-lys in center of each block and gilt lettering in second block with title along with place and date at very bottom. Many illustrations including two in color of the Prince Regent. Some foxing, mostly near or on prints. Some shadowing on facing pages from illustrations. Memoirs of Madame de Staal de Launay written by herself. Translated by Selina Bathurst. London: Richard Bentley and Son. New Burlington Street. 1877.
