Ex-Library Curtis Memorial Library, a Reading Room copy for in library use only. Library book plate on the first free end paper. The dust jacket has been attached to the covers in four places. The book is bound in cream buckram cloth spine over mottled green paper over boards. Titling in gilt on a black label on the spine. Light dust-dulling on the edges. Pages are otherwise, clean, crisp, smooth and unmarked. Includes 19 full page illustrations by Joseph Smit, Edward Whymper, and Miss A B Selous. Joseph Smit was a Dutch zoological illustrator and lithographer of many ornithology books. Edward Whymper was a British Mountaineer, engraver and illustrator. Miss Selous was the author's sister. Frederick C Selous was a British explorer, soldier, professional hunter, conservationist in South East Africa, and friend of Teddy Roosevelt. The tipped- in folding map of "Central South Africa" is in fine condition and lies flat in place. 455 pages including an index. The dust jacket is in very good condition with small chips and tears on the top of the spine panel, and a small library label on the back panel. The original price is on the front flap. There is a small dent to the front board edge as well as very slightly bumped corner at the top. Jacket flap price $35 is unclipped. The inside of the dust jacket front has a light stain associated with moisture exposure. There is a 2 ¼ inch light stain on the top page edges near the spine that caused light page rippling to the first 50 pages. There is no stain on the pages from the moisture exposure and the rippling effect becomes progressively less until it is unnoticeable after the 50th page. This effect is no larger than 2 inches across and 1 ½ inches down. Beyond this flaw the pages are white, tight, and free of any marks. For years ardent fans have known that Frederick Selous wrote many articles in rare periodicals such as The Field as well as being a contributor to the hunting books of other authors. On Jan 4 1917 at the age of 65 he was killed fighting the Germans in East Africa. The octavo album is bound in green cloth and labeled "Press Cuttings" on the spine. Laid in is an a.l.s. ( hand written letter) from Selous to Mr Coplles Dec 31st 1900. In the letter Selous tells the reader that he doesn't want to discuss his hunting trip in Newfoundland because it was sopoor. "only saw one good Stag". "The westher was nearly always bad and very few of my photographs came out". "I now know where to go."
