The posthumously published magnum opus of Aleksander Semkowicz (1885-1954), bibliophile, bookbinder, and lifelong collector of Mickiewicziana, representing the fruit of more than twenty-five years of research and collecting. Semkowicz's private collection of materials relating to Poland's national poet rivalled the holdings of the Mickiewicz Museum in Paris and formed the founding core of the Mickiewicz Museum in Warsaw. He undertook to create a definitive scholarly bibliography of Mickiewicz's works, superseding earlier attempts by Aleksander Chodźko, Karol Estreicher, Władysław Mickiewicz, and Ludwik Stolarzewicz. Arranged in chronological order, the bibliography documents every known work, fragment, and letter by Mickiewicz through 1855, the year of the poet's death, recording autograph locations, first printings, reprints, and textual history for each item, including works now lost or surviving only in fragments. The volume was left incomplete at Semkowicz's death and prepared for publication by Piotr Grzegorczyk with the assistance of Stanisław Pigoń and Leon Płoszewski, who revised and standardized the bibliographical descriptions while preserving Semkowicz's original conception. A planned continuation covering translations and a supplementary volume on posthumous reception was never completed.
