Partially unopened. Publisher's note about the front cover laid in, as issued. Orig. gilt-stamped cloth. Fine. Latrobe (1803-1891), son of the architect of the US… Capitol, was a lawyer, inventor, and painter. After briefly attending West Point, he was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1824 and became an expert in patent law. He helped found the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in the 1820s, serving as chief counsel for much of his career, and was the inventor of the "Latrobe Stove," a popular and smaller alternative to the Franklin stove. He was also a founder of the Maryland Historical Society, as well as being deeply involved in the American Colonization Society. Semmes (1851-1925) worked in Latrobe's law office, and intersperses the biography with personal reminiscences. The book is illustrated with reproductions of Latrobe's paintings and drawings.
