His history of his own times from the outbreak of the civil war is sadly lost. What does survive are parts of his Oratorum sententiae, divisiones, colores - a collection of extracts from declaimers whom he heard during his lifetime, interspersed with his own digressions and comments. There were ten books of Controversiae, five surviving, and at least two of suasoriae, of which one remains. Edward's edition of the latter, first published in 1928, remains the only annotated edition in English and the only one (since 1909) in any European language; it has long been unavailable and has never before appeared in paperback. It provides both text and facing translation, full annotation and a useful introductory essay, which offers trenchant correction of earlier suggestions that Seneca was no more than a professional hack teacher of rhetoric, and that his Latinity is inferior and unclassical. The edition will be most useful to scholars and students concerned with ancient rhetoric and with Augustan developments in classical Latin.

Original vellum with modern label affixed to spine. Hinges remain tight and text block remains nicely bound. Light markings and marginalia at front of text block. Nicely illustrated frontispiece. Includes owner's signature from Henrici Christophoci Bachmanni dated 1669. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A very scarce and nicely preserved piece of the tragedies of Senaca. Volume one has rub to the boards with scuffed edges and bent corners: crack inside at front gutter, writing on spares in ink and pencil including names, frontispiece of Seneca with hole in upper outside corner, marbled endpapers with scuffs and rubs along with crack at front and back gutter. Spine is cracked but intact with damage at head and loss at tail along with crack at front hinge.
