Based on the crimes and confidants of Italian bandit Salvatore Giuliano (played by Cammarata), who rose to prominence within the Mafia after the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. London first edition thus with text in Italian. Printed in two volumes. Distinguished by the inclusion of a historical account (narrazione) of Petrarch's poetic coronation on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, written by his close friend and fellow poet Sennuccio del Bene. In overall good plus condition, both volumes bound in soft brown calf with 6 panelled spines tooled in gilt; lightly scuffed to edges and joints. Upper board of volume 1 cracked along hinge, just holding. Both volumes otherwise square and sound. A bookplate to each pastedown is inscribed 'A J Scott'. Text block a little age toned as expected with occasional pencil marks to margins. An ownership inscription which reads 'Mary [J] Byden July 1803' sits to the top of volume 2 title page. Volume 1: 246 pp. plus indices. Volume 2 : 234 pp. plus indices collated and complete. A handsome looking pair.
