O presente diário, escrito por João Pina de Morais entre Abril de 1917 e Junho de 1918, atravessa a totalidade da presença do jovem oficial do Corpo Expedicionário Português nos campos da Flandres, na I Guerra Mundial, e tem como destinatária Lídia da Assunção Monteiro, com quem mantinha, na época, uma relação de afecto que viria a resultar no matrimónio, celebrado a 29 de Novembro de 1923. Encontrado num cofre há muito encerrado, por indicação de uma amiga próxima de Lídia Monteiro, o manuscrito deste diário de guerra de Pina de Morais é publicamente divulgado na presente data porque, segundo a mesma fonte, era vontade do casal que este testemunho, dado o seu carácter intimista, apenas viesse a ser publicado após a morte de ambos, acontecida em 1953, com Pina de Morais e em 1998 no caso de Lídia Monteiro. Pretende-se, com a edição do presente volume, dar mais um contributo para o conhecimento da vida e obra do autor, bem como das condições que envolveram a participação do Corpo Expedicionário Português na guerra das trincheiras. O título atribuído, retirado do pedido expresso pelo autor na abertura deste diário, tem como objectivo convocar à leitura todos aqueles que com ele se cruzarem, não no fundo de uma trincheira, como pressagiava Pina de Morais, mas no escaparate de uma livraria. Assim ficarão a conhecer o drama de amor e de guerra de um dos mais generosos soldados das tropas portuguesas.
