Dj is edge worn with a chip missing at lower spine edge. "Sir Stephen Francis, clergyman of St. Saviour's in Southwark, was angry, but his son, Miles Francis, was even angrier. To be shut up in one's room just because of a street fight was bad enough, but to be apprenticed to a linen-draper, as his father threatened seemed a horrible fate, for he had always been told he was to atend Oxford, like his father, when he grew to fifteen.".

First edition. 200pp., frontispiece and 8 other full-page and in-text black and white illustrations by Nancy Sayer. E.K. Seth-Smith was the author of several historical adventure stories for children. The book is largely set in the Fens in 15th century England. The book is bound in the original maroon boards with silver titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with a 2 3/4" patch of very slight fading on the spine. The contents are tight and clean with a water stain near the fore corner of the top edge of the text block that has seeped a little way into the top edge of the front and rear free endpapers. There is a tape stain running down the fore edge together with the outline of a larger strip of tape on both the front and rear fixed endpapers (this appears to be where a protective cover for the dustwrapper was attached). There is an inscription on the front free endpaper and a number written on the front fixed endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear and light soiling and the spine is slightly faded. The bottom 2" of the back of the wrapper and rear flap have a water stain that has caused wrinkling to the paper.
