Nel 1884, lo Stato italiano acquistava 1826 Codici provenientiÂdalla collezione libraria del defunto lord Bertram Ashburnham. Vi erano confluitiÂimportanti fondi librari, quali i Barrois, Stowe e la cosiddetta (ricchissima) Appendice, ma il pregio e la popolarita' di quella raccolta era soprattutto dovuta ai manoscritti di Guglielmo Libri, matematico e storico della matematica. Tuttavia, in seguito, nacquero delle interrogazioni e interpellanze parlamentari, in particolare dovute in questo caso a Settimio Costantini, che rilevava come i libri ricevuti non corrispondessero in realta' a quelli del catalogo sulla base del quale era stato effettuato l'acquisto. Dal discorso di Costantini: "I codici, bene o male descritti in questo catalogo, non ci sono stati consegnati tutti dal primo all'ultimo, come era nostro diritto di pretendere. Ne mancano niente meno che 39; ed io potrei indicarne i numeri ad uno ad uno". ITA.
