The question of whether the blood of living animals can decompose has been debated for centuries, and early medical science was dominated by the thought that it could. This book explicitly and directly challenges this long-held notion by stating that the blood cannot become putrid in a living animal. The author begins by reviewing the essential circumstances necessary to cause putrefaction, which include a certain degree of heat, the presence of vital and pure air, and sufficient moisture. The author then goes on to explain why each of these elements is missing or in insufficient quantity for putrefaction to occur in a living animal. The point is made that blood is the very life force of the animal and that vitality is the main impediment to the putrefaction of the blood. The author supports the position that blood contains the principle of life, which has been the subject of much debate, by citing the opinions of notable historical figures such as Hunter and Fontana. The author concludes by summarizing the reasons why putrefaction of the blood cannot occur in living animals and presenting the results of experiments that support the argument.
