Softcover. Condition: g- to vg. First edition. Quarto (10 1/4 x 7"). 144pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers with white lettering to covers and spine. Title page inscribed and signed by Robert Capa: "To Rona, hoping that he won't have to pay for my Paris hotel bills again. Capa." the inscription refers to Capa's early years in Paris, at a time when he didn't have enough money to pay for his hotel rooms. At one point, the manager of the hotel he stayed at confiscated his shoes, thus Rona had to bail him out (Whelan, 1994.) Rona was also a Hungarian émigré who owned the ABC Press photo agency in Amsterdam, which represented photographers like Capa or László Moholy-Nagy, later the Magnum Photos in The Netherlands. This book serves as a photo-document of the then newly founded state of Israel, capturing the already diverse cultural, sociological and physical landscape. By the time this work was published, Robert Capa was already an acclaimed war photographer, photojournalist and one of the founders of Magnum Photos. Subjects ranging from politicians and military leaders, to new immigrants, farmers and the Ultra-orthodox community are featured. Irwin Shaw's text provides relevant and informative information to accompany and give context to the stunning b&w photographs taken by Capa. Wrappers rubbed along joints and edges. Head of spine chipped. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in very good condition.
