Paperback. Condition: Fair. In this book, Anthony Shay examines the history of the Moiseyev Dance Company and the life and works of its renowned choreographer and founder, Igor Moiseyev. Founded in Moscow in 1937 amid a mass Soviet Union campaign of political repression, Moiseyev's theatrical dance troupe came to be an international force, transforming the folk traditions of the Soviet Union into a vital diplomatic tool that helped usher in a new era of cultural exchange. The author explores the company through multiple lenses of spectacle, Russian nationalism, and the Cultural Cold War to analyze its history and its enduring contributions to dance and global culture. The first English-language study of its kind, Shay blends academic research with personal anecdote to provide a nuanced analysis of Moiseyev's importance in choreographic art and his place in the world of dance.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. When Men Dance explores the intersection of dance and perceptions of male gender and sexuality across history and different cultural contexts. In many societies, the public performance of dance is regarded as a feminine activity, so that men who dance often operate in a sea of stereotypes. This volume's scholarly essays tackles the history and dilemmas that revolve around dance and notions of masculinity from a variety of dance studies perspectives. Accompanying the theoretical chapters are a group of fascinating personal histories that complement their themes. The dancing male body emerges in its many contexts, from the ballet, modern, and popular dance world to stages in Georgian and Victorian England, Weimar Germany, India and the Middle East. The men who dance and those who analyze them tell stories that will be both familiar and surprising for insiders and outsiders alike.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Mazda Publishers, Published 1999. Hardcover, x, 235 pp.; 25 cm; Bibliotheca Iranica, Performing Arts Series No. 5; illustrated with black-and-white figures, including photographs, archaeological and manuscript images, and Persian calligraphy. In Very Good condition with a Very Good dust jacket. Blue pebbled cloth-covered boards with silver lettering on spine; mild shelf and edge wear. Covers and binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Dust jacket illustrated with a painting of a dancer by Jamal; rear panel with photograph of a dancer of AVAZ International Dance Theatre; flaps with author photograph and biography and a color detail of a dancing figure from a late 14th-century manuscript. Jacket has a few small nicks and light creasing along edges, and mild shelf and edge wear. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. [From dust jacket] Choreophobia is the term coined by Dr. Anthony Shay, in this first full-length study of Iranian dance, to characterize the widespread ambiguous and negative reactions to solo improvised dance, the most popular dance form in the Iranian world. The central project of this study, designed for both scholars and general readers, is to identify and analyze what factors currently contribute and have historically contributed to the ambiguous position solo improvised dance occupies in an Iranian context. This is reflected both currently and historically in attempts to ban its public performances. In spite of the negative reactions solo improvised dance can evoke, nonetheless it is also loved and performed throughout the Iranian world, emphasizing the ambiguity that accompanies its performances in various social contexts. Shay, a dancer, choreographer and founder of the AVAZ International Dance Theatre, earned the first Ph.D. in Dance History and Theory at the University of California, Riverside. Figures range from prehistoric potsherds and a Sasanian vase to a 1950s Iranian film advertisement and AVAZ performance photographs. Contents: Acknowledgements; Introduction; Solo Improvised Dance: Its Movement Practices and Aesthetics; Historical Aspects of Solo Improvised Dance; Dance and Other Movement Activities in an Iranian-Islamic Context; The Iranian-American Community; Solo Improvised Dance in Social Contexts; Solo Improvised Dance in Performance Contexts; Summary and Conclusions; Notes to the Chapters; Illustrations; Bibliography; Index.…

Paperback. Condition: New. This study describes and analyzes the phenomenal popularity of exotic dance forms in America. Throughout the twentieth century and especially since 1950, millions have begun learning and performing various Balkan dances, the tango, and other Latin American dances, along with the classical dances of India, Japan, and Indonesia. Most studies in dance ethnography and anthropology have focused specifically on "dancing in the field," or the dancing that native dancers do. This study, by contrast, examines the ways in which ethnic dancing has allowed many Americans to create more exciting, "exotic" and romantic identities. The author describes the uniquely American enthusiasm for exotic dances, and cites specific deficiencies in the U.S. cultural identity that have led many people to seek new feelings and experiences through exotic dance genres.…

paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…
