Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The combo of British-born pianist George Shearing -- piano, vibes, guitar, bass and drums -- played an idiom combining swing, bop and modern classical influences which was popular in the 1950s. He's probably as well known today, however, for the odd tendency of his record companies to decorate his album jackets with color photographs of sexy babes. (In his partial defense, Shearing, born blind, couldn't actually see his own record jackets.) But this promotional item takes the cake. It's not a book but a 7-inch, white label, promotional 45 rpm vinyl disc in picture sleeve, PRO 782, offering a "Preview Selection from the New Capitol Album 'Latin Lace' T-1082." The purportedly Latina bare-backed lady stares into a mirror, her reflection emphasizing her formidable cleavage, as the advertising copy promises: "If you like the looks of the girl on the cover . . . you'll love the sounds in George Shearing's new album Latin Lace! On release Nov. 3rd, 1958." Seven-inch promotional disc appears unplayed, color cardboard picture sleeve very-good-plus with some ringwear to white verso. (If requested, we will also enclose at no extra charge an original of the 1958 Shearing 12-inch LP "Latin Lace," itself, Capitol T1082, near-mint vinyl in a very good cardboard jacket; the LP alone cataloging at $20; making it a $7 value as we figure these things.) This 7-inch promotional "single" now reduced from $25.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Not a book but a 10-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl record album, MGM Unbreakable Long Playing Microgroove (mono) E-518, very-good-plus vinyl in a very good cardboard jacket with a narrow dampstain to front edge, featuring "Summertime," "September in the Rain," six others. "The group has brought something fresh and mellifluous to bop," Leonard Feather's jacket notes assure us. "The Shearing unit is the living, rhythmic proof that bop is still very much alive." Margie Hyams featured here on vibes. Whether bassist Oscar Pettiford, who had been playing with Shearing at the Three Deuces on 52nd Street and then at Cafe Society, recorded with the group here is unclear, though likely. This album would catalog $60 in "near mint," though we grade it slightly lower than that. Now reduced from $20.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Pianist George Shearing is that rare thing, a European jazz musician who became a household name in the US, as a result of the 'Shearing sound' - the recordings of his historic late 1940s quintet. Together with his unique 'locked hands' approach to playing the piano, Shearing's quintet with guitar and vibraphone in close harmony to his own playing revolutionised small group jazz, and ensured that after seven years as Melody Maker's top British pianist, he achieved even greater success in America. His compositions have been recorded by everyone from Sarah Vaughan to Miles Davis, and his best known pieces include Lullaby of Birdland, She and Conception. His story is all the more remarkable because Shearing was born blind. As a teenager he joined Claude Bampton's orchestra, and he recounts hilarious anecdotes about the trials and tribulations of this all blind group. By the start of the war years, Shearing was established as one of Britain's most popular and impressive jazz pianists - broadcasting regularly and playing and recording with Stephane Grappelli. In 1947 he emigrated to the US and started his landmark series of records with his quintet as well as performing classical pieces with several leading symphony orchestras. His candid reminiscences include a behind the scenes experience of New York's 52nd Street in its heyday, as well as memories of a vast roll-call of professional colleagues that includes all the great names in jazz. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
