Softcover. Yearly Meeting. -- 43 p.; 21.5 cm. [with supplement, same imprint] A declaration of New-England Yearly Meeting of Friends, upon various Christian doctrines : composed mostly of extracts from the approved writings of the Society. -- Wilbur `came into prominence in 1838, by opposing Joseph J. Gurney, an English minister, who,he claimed, was exalting the letter of the Bible as against the inward light. His own Meeting sustained him, but the NEYM was opposed to him and, to depose him from the ministry, joined his Monthly Mtg to another which had a majority against him. In this manner he was disowned by Friends' (New Schaff-Herzog encyc., v. 12, 351) -- `His own monthly meeting sympathized with Wilbur's position but NEYM appointed a committee to deal with him. It found him cont entions and obstinate; he stood on his rights under the discipline and went out of the way to make trouble.' (E. Russell, History of Quakerism, 352) -- `In an evil moment, the leaders of NEYM--men of wealth and station and comm anding influence--resolved to discipline & silence John Wilbur & to remove the uncomfortable thorn in the side ofthe Yearly Meeting, now overwhelmingly "Gurneyite" in its attitude and sympathy. It must be admitted that Wilbur was very annoying. He was opposed to all change.' (R.Jones, Later periods, 521) -- From the Narrative itself: `In order to give a faithful history, it seems necessary to go back several years, and advert to some circumstances that then transpired; and unpleasant as is the duty, we are subjected to the painful necessity of exposing the course of an individual, formerly a minister in unity with us,who has been prominent asa leader in this schism' Good, side-sewn, lt. dampstained, in orig. plain tan wrapper.
