It was a sentimental journey for the pilgrims, a chance to connect with their Dutch heritage back in the ancestral home. The author provides an insider's account of the journey and shares valuable historical insights of the time. Beyond just a travelogue, this book analyzes themes of patriotism, tradition, kinship, and identity. The author doesn't shy away from the realities of the journey, balancing the elation and excitement with the mundanity and occasional discomfort of ocean travel. The experiences and reflections recorded in the book reveal the deep bond between the travelers and their ancestral home. It's a unique and valuable historical document that captures a moment of cultural rediscovery and connection. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Very rare hardcover edition.123 pages which excludes a separate section in the middle of the book titled 'A Guide through Amsterdam' which runs 21 pages, and excludes another section titled 'The Pilgrim Fathers: Exhibition Of Documents From Public And Private Collections At Leiden, Relating To The Dutch Settlements In North-America' which runs 21 pages, as well as a section titled 'Visit of the Holland Society of New-York to Rotterdam' which has 6 unnumbered pages. So, in all, there are approximately 171 pages. There are a number of full-page illustrations, documents, menus, etc. There are several red colored pages dividing one section from the other. There is a map. There is a large paste-down illustration titled 'Leiden: Exhibition Of Documents Relating To The Pilgrim-Fathers' with 'New Amsterdam' at the bottom and 'August' and '1888' at the top corners. Quite an unusual book. You can see the covers in the photos. Both the front and rear have handling soiling. The front cover has several small stains off the bottom edge. The rear cover has one as well. None of these stains has any effect on the interior of the book, not even on the inside covers. The edges of the covers are in very solid shape there is a small spot of rub-through at both the top and bottom front corner, not the case with the rear corners. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. Significantly, the spine is in very solid shape, and the book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers. The interior of the book is in very good shape. There are a few finger-printy looking spots on a couple of the blank front end papers, just a tiny bit of the same off the bottom edge of the title page (see photo), and one such spot off the outer edge of the first two pages of text, none of it coming anywhere near the print. After that, the pages are remarkably clean. I turned over every single one and I don't think I saw any soiling at all, certainly nothing conspicuous. Nor did I see any conspicuous creasing. There are no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. I saw two consecutive top corners with a thin crease. The deckled edges are, for the most part, in very good shape. There was one page that was slightly wider at its outer edge, so the outer edge got a little darkened and slightly jagged in a few spots. Anyone who might want to attempt it could trim the outer edge of this page. There's also one bottom edge that was a little long and as a result has a little darkness there. In turning over all the pages I noticed an instance where the outer edge of four consecutive pages had a small impression, nothing very significant. There really wasn't anything else that needs to be called out with regards to the condition of the pages. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere.
