Boards in d.j. Illus. Mary Shepard (illustrator). 4th impression. Octavo, original yellow cloth boards with illustration of Mary Poppins in red to the upper board and lettering in red upper board and spine, top edge publisher's red tint, numerous b&w illustrations (full page and in text), illustrated endpapers, pp 206 plus 4 pp publisher's ads. The boards have minor light flecking and some darkening at the botton edge; overall they are clean and bright. A small mark to the inner corner of the front endpaper where the original bookseller ticket may have been removed; otherwise very clean internally. The dustjacket is worn, with light marking along the spine partially obscuring the text. It is chipped to the top of the spine, with a chip near the top of the front panel and a small chip to the inner edge; there are also chips along the front inner fold. (Despite all this, the illustrated front panel still presents quite well.) Very good condition in acceptable dustjacket, repaired and protected. A relatively early edition of the classic novel printed four years after the first edition. As the dustjacket states: "Mary Poppins has stepped into nursery literature to live forever in the select company of Peter Pan, the Bastables, Mole and Toad, Winnie the Pooh and Doctor Dolittle." The book is charmingly illustrated throughout by Mary Shepard (the daughter of E.H. Shepard who illustrated the Christopher Robin books.) A nice copy of a much-loved story.
