His critical reviews and essays helped to evolve and influence film making internationally. His book on American film director John Ford, About John Ford, is considered to be one of the best books on FordŐs life and work. Some of AndersonŐs earliest film endeavors were documentaries on a variety of topics, and lent to an important approach to many British films of the 60s, with their emphasis on a more intense and graphic social realism than had been presented prior, as demonstrated in LindsayŐs film This Sporting Life with Richard Harris, Karel ReiszŐs Saturday Night and Sunday Morning with Albert Finney, and Tony RichardsonŐs The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner with Michael Redgrave and Tom Courtenay. Anderson won an Oscar for a short film early in his career in 1954 for a documentary about a school for deaf children, ThursdayŐs Children, narrated by Richard Burton. His more contemporary work can be seen in the 1985 documentary about a tour of the popular rock band Wham!, Foreign Skies: Wham! In China. For many of us, AndersonŐs most treasured films are his ÔMick TravisŐ trilogy, all featuring the brilliantly cast Malcolm McDowell as the character Mick Travis in If, O Lucky Man!, and Britannia Hospital. In addition to film work, Lindsay Anderson contributed a significant presence in British theatre as a director, most notably for the plays of David Storey.
