A Russian physician, politician, and reformer, Shingarev was imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress from November 27, 1917, until January 5, 1918, the period covered by this diary. On January 5, Shingarev and Fedor Fedorovich Kokoshkin were moved from the prison to the hospital where they were murdered early the next morning.
