Folio (12 1/2 x8 1/2), 19 leaves hand written in ink on both sides, stitched but without covers set in a modern folding box. The log is a little dog-eared, with a few stains. However, it is in quite nice condition for a 19th century log book. This is an original log book of a voyage from Rio de Janeiro to New York from December 24, 1827, to February 20, 1828, which is when the ship arrived at its destination (Sandy Hook). For each day, the weather and conditions are given in detail, the various headings, and the occasional sighting of another ship. While no whaling is involved in this venture, this log book came from a whaling collection. The name of the ship is not mentioned, but previous information from the original collection indicates that ithe ship is listed in the National Archives and Records Service as the Augusta, commanded by Captain Suchet Mauran. The ship had one deck, three masts, a square stern, and a woman bust head. The ship was 85 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 226 tons. Captain Mauran was also the commander of the bark Oxford some twenty years later. On the rear leaf of the log is a 16 line poem about the sea, but no author is given.
