Add to basketMeiji editions of two classic primers for the game of Shogi, or Japanese Chess. These works were part of Bungyokuho's Shogi series, which he described as containing "the necessary-reads for those who enjoy playing [the game]" (Yoshikawa, 35r). Shogi Gokumyo was originally released in 1849 by Kuwabara Kuchu, student of the 8th Sh…ogi Master, Oshashi Sokei the 9th. He only reached the 4th-dan (level) himself, instead making his name through publishing two chess books: Shogi Gyokuzu (1836) and the present volume. Each contains 100 chess puzzles, which makes Kuwabara only the second person in Japanese Chess history to produce that many. Of the 100 that feature in Shogi Gokumyo, 50 are normal games while the other 50 are kyokuzume puzzles, where the starting or ending positions of the pieces form a shape with a specific meaning. These puzzles are notably harder to devise, again showing Kuwabara's skill. The famous author Koda Rohan wrote of this book: "people were astonished, and admired how he had deceived even the gods of intellect" (Koda, p. 112). The first volume shows the puzzles, the second shows the solutions. Shogi hitori geiko was originally released in 1833 by Fukushima Junki as the sequel to his 1804 chess book Shogi Kinuburui. In the introduction, Hokurindo (the original publisher) writes "this book was produced so that beginner learners would not have to rely on a teacher, and could master the secrets of the art for themselves" (p. 1). It contains 30 numbered games in the first volume and roughly 30 more unnumbered games in the second volume. Shogi hitori geiko has a duplicate leaf 43, not present in other copies. Provenance: from the library of the Japan Society, with the society's gilt logo blocked onto the custom folding boxes and its shelf labels on the spines. Founded in 1891 at premises in Hanover Square, the Japan Society of London (the final two words of the name later dropped) has been at the centre of British appreciation of Japanese history and culture ever since, hosting lectures, royal visitors, and curating the Britain and Japan: Biographical Portraits book series. The society's catalogue cards are loosely inserted, and catalogue slips have been tipped-in to Shogi Gokumyo volume II and Shogi hitori geiko volume I. Koda Rodan, Go to Shogi, 1922; Yoshikawa Hanshichi, Bungyokuho Zohan Hatsuda Shomoku, 1885. Two works, small octavo (155 x 110 mm). Diagrams of Japanese chess boards in Shogi Gokumyo vol. I. Shogi Gokumyo: Original light blue paper wrappers, renewed yotsume-toji stitching, spines capped with grey cloth, paper labels to front covers lettered and bordered in black. Shogi hitori geiko: Original blue paper wrappers, renewed yotsume-toji stitching, spines capped with grey cloth, paper labels to front covers lettered in black with black double-fillets. Housed in custom dark blue cloth chemise lettered in gilt. Wrappers variously creased and toned, stitching just starting on Shogi Gokumyo vol. I, otherwise strong, a few black ink stains to front wrapper of Shogi hitori geiko vol. I, loss to label of Shogi Gokumyo vol. I: a very good set.
