This book is a historical account of the events leading up to and surrounding the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The author provides a detailed description of the planning, construction, and operation of the fair, as well as the social and cultural impact it had on the city and the nation. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. RARE: Only 6 copies held in the US in libraries, and only one other currently for sale. A beautiful 20 page souvenir Christmas storybook sent to children who mailed their letters to Santa in the Portland, Oregon, Golden Rule Bazaar department store's letter box -- the location is stamped above the publisher information on the title page. Illustrated throughout with chromolithographs, including one full-page illustration. The charming story incorporates a poem about the store. Some soiling to the cover and a split at the bottom spine, a closed tear to the title page, otherwise in great condition for a book of this type and age. The Golden Rule Bazaar was established by David Solis-Cohen in Portland in May 1882 as a branch of the San Francisco department store of the same name owned by the Davis brothers. Cohen was a noted writer (sometimes writing under the pen name "Daisy Shortcut", as here), who served as the Portland police commissioner and in the chamber of commerce, and was an important figure in the city's Jewish community as well as an Elk and Mason. A rare piece of Portland history as well as a lovely example of a late 19th-century illustrated children's book and department store advertising.…

Add to basketCondition: Very good. First edition; 6 3/4 x 5; pp. 3-21, [1]; beige, pictorial, stiff wraps; illustrated with monochrome lithographs and engravings; a small, closed cut along lower staple; a bit of age-toning and a few small worn spots to wraps; overall in very good condition.A man of great many talents, David Solis Cohen (1850 - 1928) was a journalist, lawyer, author (often writing under the pen name Daisy Shortcut), businessman, auctioneer, etc. Born in Philadelphia in a Jewish family, he headed West in 1877 - first to Oakland, California, where he worked for auctioneers, Frank and Frederick Mellis and read Torah during the High Holidays at First Hebrew Congregation. He moved to Portland, Oregon in 1878, where he ran an auction house until 1889, when he established the Golden Rule Bazaar (also known as Cohen, Davis and Company) - a wholesale importer / exporter of "toys and notions." Among the many civic duties he took on he served on the Oregon Board of Immigration, was the Commissioner of Charities and Corrections, a police commisioner, and so on. In the early years of the Golden Rule Bazaar, Cohen would sent the current beautiful booklet to children, who mailed their letters to Santa to the store's letter box. The story followed George, whose little sister was very sick on Christmas. He was on a mission to make her feel better by getting her the gift she most wanted, so he snuck quietly out and ".where do you think little George was bound for? Why, the Golden Rule Bazaar." (cleverly advertising the business within the storyline, the book also included a full-page illustration of the bazaar). Very scarce - OCLC locates only 3 copies, over two records.…
