In the 1930s, police cameras used intense, bright flash powder or early high-wattage incandescent bulbs. For someone with a severe, involuntary nervous twitch (blepharospasm), the blinding flash would trigger a powerful, immediate spasm, causing them to shut their eyes at the moment the shutter clicked. But it was also common for seasoned criminals to intentionally blink, grimace, or look down to distort their features and ruin the mugshot, making it harder for the public to recognize them from a flyer.
