Paperback. Condition: New. Norm Sibum's wry, expansive poems tell stories and his characters, ancient and modern - prophets, emperors and cabbies address the old, unanswered questions with their lives, their failures and losses, their unanticipated moments of love. He shares the stoic pessimism of Tiberius, reflecting on the accident of his rule, and Marcus Aurelius, contemplating his impending death. This pessimism is remote from the easy cynicism of our age, yet Sibum is among the most modern of poets. He defines the present world by what it lacks, or by small things of the past it retains, despite itself. His classicism is without nostalgia, and he doesn't long for the desert when his Old Testament figures speak. There is always "unfinished business" for the poems to explore.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Norm Sibum's poems are field notes from the end of empire, a satirist's barbs, verse letters from a poet to his enemies and friends. He proceeds with reverent disillusionment (no one and nothing let off the hook), not so much along the streets of Montreal or Washington or Rome as along an irregular tetrameter line, and then another, and then another: waves breaking on a beach; or a poet, in spite of or because of all odds, again embarking. This is not a world in which there is comfort-and yet there is comfort in the rhythms. One must learn to read them aloud (to misquote Chesterton), without ever trusting them.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. 'Sibum's ability to combine the classical with pop culture is such that one needs to approach his text with an intellect that is as manoeuvrable as a classic sports car. This collection's ideal reader is the person whose life exceeds the recommended daily dose of decadence.' The author reveals himself as a poet of a slow apocalypse that rattles the crockery not in extravagant thunder but in forlorn coffee shops and pizza joints, in down-at-heel apartment houses, among tough waitresses and stoical street-philosophers. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "Smoke and Lilacs" is full of play and shadow, whispered intimations of mortality and glances of humour, elegiac lyric playing against steely classicism, an easy modern vernacular eliding with timeless grace. Sibum's meditative narratives move between worlds, modern and ancient, the state of our civic order and the realm of love. Human love and lust exist within the forces of empire - Rome or America. Men and women continue to ask of life 'from what god does it come, 'To what serendipity does it go' if chance is all and all there's been?', and the gods 'laugh at those who laugh at chance'. Across centuries, voices create a complex music from their moments on earth, the echoes of their 'gossip in the rain's cold light'. Presents intimations of mortality and glances of humour, elegiac lyric playing against steely classicism, an easy modern vernacular eliding with timeless grace.
